I’m an 82-year-old retired physician. Yes, that is my age and I’m proud of it! I am 5’9 and have kept my weight at 165 LBS for the last 55 years. How have I done it?

  • I spend an average of 5 hours on vigorous exercise and conditioning weekly
  • I ski the Black Diamond slopes of the Colorado mountains in the winter (even after knee replacement)
  • I refrain from bad eating
  • I don’t smoke and stay properly hydrated
  • I work on mindfulness and mental self-care

Whether as a practicing doctor or concerned family member, I have seen the trickle-down negative impact of subpar fitness and wellness. It’s devastating.

Bad dietary habits, smoking, drinking: Patient after patient would walk into my office desperate for help but unable to follow through. It was frustrating but I never judged them. I always came from a place of empathy. 

Could I completely understand what they were going through? No, not personally. I’ve never had weight issues; however, I did grow up with family members who were caught in the death grip of obesity.

My maternal and paternal grandfathers died of heart attacks at 60. My paternal grandmother had severe high blood pressure suffering 2 strokes before she was 55. My father was moderately overweight and developed Type 2 diabetes later in life. By the time he was 80, he had developed senile dementia.

As a medical professional, I am convinced this diagnosis was a result of a life-long high fat diet and severe high cholesterol, which caused a blockage of arteries to his brain.

Watching my family succumb to obesity and malnutrition lit a fuse in me to make an impact and help as many people as I could get on an optimal health track.
